Im Januar 2013 ist es endlich soweit. Es sind alle Voraussetzungen gegeben, um unser schon seit Jahren gehegtes Vorhaben, einen Hund aus dem südeuropäischen Tierschutz zu adoptieren, in die Tat umzusetzen. Nach etlichen Stunden Suche im Internet finden wir auf der Homepage des Tierschutzverein Europa Telmo, einen ca. 1 Jahr alten und als ängstlich beschriebenen Schäferhund-Mischling. Ein paar Wochen später fällt mit der Unterschrift unter dem Adoptionsvertrag der Startschuss für die noch notwendigen Vorbereitungen. Welches Futter soll er bekommen, wo und worauf schlafen, womit spielen, welches Halsband, Geschirr und Leine. Am 6. April können wir ihn dann endlich in Bruchsal abholen und schnell erleben wir, Telmo ist nicht „nur" ängstlich, er ist ein Angsthund. Noch bevor er das erste Mal sein zukünftiges Heim sieht, ergreift er die erste sich bietenden Chance zur Flucht. Nach einer nervenaufreibenden Suche gelingt es nur unter großen Schwierigkeiten ihn auch einzufangen. Eine mehr oder weniger schlaflose Nacht später werden wir am nächsten Tag intensiv mit Telmos Ängsten konfrontiert. Er hat Angst davor in den Garten zu gehen, er hat Angst vor uns, er hat sogar Angst sich zu lösen und beim Versuch ihn anzuleinen wird er zu einem zitternden und sich nicht mehr bewegendem Häufchen Elend. Mit Unterstützung der Mainzer Tierpsychologin Ulrike (Ulli) Zink und Rütters DOGS-Coach Vera Schmitz versuchen wir Telmo bei der Überwindung seiner Ängste zu helfen, eine Bindung aufzubauen und ihm Sicherheit zu geben. Es folgen acht prägende, lehrreiche und emotionale Monate auf unserer Reise mit einem Angsthund.\r
